[gone] MEXICO is a photographic exhibition and collaboration and the first in what will be a continuing series of the [gone] project. The exhibition chronicles a month's journey from the Yucatan to Oaxaca by photographers Anastasia Fugger and Carolina Pimenta. In the resulting images, Fugger and Pimenta explore intimate encounters through their lenses while sidestepping the traditional stereotypes of Mexico. The exhibition also offers a reflection on the volatile nature of borders and culture.
The exhibition is curated Roya Sachs and will be on view at Parasol Projects at 2 Rivington Street in New York from November 13th to November 16th. The exhibition and the subsequent installments of the [gone] series will also available online on an ongoing basis.
During their travels for [gone] Mexico, the photographers explored the complex and dynamic aspects of collaborating, and updated an art movement that dates back to the late 1970s, when artists such as Peter Fischli and David Weiss dedicated their artistic careers to discovering the different aspects of collaboration. By questioning their relationship and acknowledging their differences, the photographers allow a visual dialogue to emerge through their images. The nature of collaboration will be a subject of continuing investigation throughout the [gone] series.
The fragmentary nature of [gone] MEXICO and the [gone] series and its concentration into micro-narratives is at the foundation of for Fugger and Pimenta’s photography practice. It is driven both by a desire to tell a story in every picture and to successfully create a recognizable style which combines identity, humor and emotional honesty.
