Alondra de la Parra in NYC

Mexican-American conductor Alondra de la Parra and her Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas return to New York City in a unique concert to perform a repertoire honoring late Mexican composers. De la Parra will be joined onstage by Mexican musician and pop star Natalia Lafourcade (see the above video of the two performing together in a previous concert).

The concert will be on Saturday, November 1st at The Town Hall in Mahattan.

Alondra de la ParraThe concert is part of the 2014 edition of the Celebrate Mexico Now! Festival and will include selections featured on the Orchestra's platinum albums Alma Mexicana and Travieso Carmesi such as Mexican classics such as "Amaneci otra Vez," "Cielito Lindo," and "Solamente una Vez".

“The concert will showcase the diverse styles and eras of Mexican music.” said de la Parra “This music deserves a place in the core repertoire of every orchestra."

Drawn to Conducting

Born in New York, de la Parra grew up in Mexico and attended school in England. She studied piano and cello as a youth before turning her attention to composing and conducting.

“Conducting is a discipline that really needs hard work and you never quite get there, but I just love what I do.” said de la Parra “What I hope is to be a source of inspiration for the musicians to play their best.”

It was with that spirit that de la Parra created the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. In 2004, the Mexican Consulate asked de la Parra to produce a concert featuring Mexican music for that year's Celebrate Mexico Now! Festival. A 65-piece orchestra concert was produced to critical acclaim. She has been conducting the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and other orchestras all over the world ever since.

De la Parra's recent conducting highlights include appearances with the Houston and San Antonio Orchestras, concerts with the Singapore Sun Festival Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra. She has also appeared as guest conductor with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, Japan Virtuoso Symphony, Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Mexico, Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Veracruz, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Aguascalientes, and Mexico's National Symphony Orchestra, among others.
