Dominican Jockey Wins Kentucky Derby

Jockey Joel Rosario of the Dominican Republic rode Orb to his first victory at the 139th Kentucky Derby, winning the US$2 million Run for the Roses ahead of Golden Soul and Revolutionary at Churchill Downs in the U.S. city of Louisville in the state of Kentucky on May 4.

The victory continued Rosario’s hot streak, as he had ridden Animal Kingdom to a win at the US$10 million Dubai World Cup in March before winning the biggest race in the United States on May 4.

“This guy today, it was all him,” Rosario said. “I was so far behind and I just let him be calm and let him be relaxed and he was available to do it all.”

Orb ran by Normandy Invasion during the final stretch, where he held off Golden Boy and 17 other horses to win by an impressive 2½ lengths.

“It’s awesome,” Rosario told reporters. “To win the Dubai World Cup and the Kentucky Derby in the same year – you can’t believe how good it feels.
