Alex Honnold – El Sendero Luminoso
On January 15, 2014, Alex Honnold free-soloed El Sendero Luminoso (The Shining Path) in El Portrero Chico, Mexico in a little over 3 hours. The climb rises 2,500 feet to the summit of the El Toro mountain. It could be the most difficult rope-less climb in history. See the amazing video above.
A bigwall sport-route for rock climbers, El Sendero Luminoso rises over the impressive front side of El Toro. It is one of the harder long routes in in Mexico — 11 of its 15 pitches have a rock climbing grade of 5.12. That is the highest grade and the realm of true experts. The route was originally established by rock climbers Jeff Jackson, Kurt Smith and Pete Peacock.
