Beauty in Bolivia
The largest and highest salt desert in the world, Salar de Uyuni, recently served as a stage for the fashion show Iconoclasta 2013. This premiere event celebrated the history and rich traditions of Bolivia’s culture and beauty and presented the latest work from some of Latin America's most renowned fashion designers. Bolivian President Evo Morales was in attendance along with many other Bolivian and international dignitaries.
The Salar de Uyuni salt plains are located in the department of Potosi in Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes; recognized as the world's highest and largest salt flat at 11,975 feet above sea level and 4,085 square miles wide. The event's purpose was to showcase the immense beauty of Bolivia and gain global tourist recognition for the Country and the Potosi region.
The event was the brainchild of noted Bolivian lifestyle journalist and television personality, Sandra Coscio and Bolivian fashion designer Galo Sanchez. “The creation of the world’s first runway on the Salar de Uyuni is a monumental achievement. We want to share Bolivia with the world as a culinary, cultural and mystical travel destination, and we are using fashion as a medium,” said Ms. Coscio.
The fashion show featured an all star lineup of Latin American Fashion Designers including; Mr. Sanchez, and Carmen Camacho-awaj Warni, Sonia Aviles from Bolivia, Nicolas Felizola, Samy Gicherman from Venezuela, Cecilia Bolocco from Chile, Alvaro Reyes from Columbia, Carlos Vigil from Peru, Alvaro Nunez from Costa Rica and Fernando Melo, Ricardo Patraca, Eduardo Villegas from Mexico.
